With a clear and simple style, Lucille Caron and Phil St. Jacques introduce basic algebra, including integers and variables. Then students can move on to understanding how to solve equations, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Problem-solving techniques are clearly explained and many examples are included throughout the book. Whether you are looking to learn this information for the first time, on your own or with a tutor, or you would like to review some algebra skills, this book will be a great choice.

Percents and Ratios and Pre-Algebra and Algebra are two of a series of six books By Lucille Caron and Philip M. St. Jacques. Both books are designed to help a student, parent, or teacher in different aspects of mathematical problems by offering step-by-step sample solutions to concepts presented in the problems. These are not textbooks, but rather well-written and easy-to-understand manuals. Each has 28 sections relating to its title. Percents and Ratios investigates such topics as ‘The Meaning of Ratios,’ ‘Ratios and Percents,’ ‘Units of Measure,’ ‘Ratios and Decimals,’ ‘Scale Drawings,’ and ‘The Golden Rectangle.’ Pre-Algebra and Algebra examines ‘Algebra and Integers’ and ‘Absolute Value’ and includes chapters on the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers. Also included are numerous sections on how to solve different types of equations. The book ends with an excellent section on how to solve inequalities. The sections in each book follow the same pattern. Each starts with an explanation of what is to be covered, step-by-step solutions (with explanations), and, finally, some type of related material or a helpful hint. At the end of both books one finds a section on ‘Further Reading,’ a list of Internet addresses, and an index. These two books and, most likely, the four others in the series would make a fantastic resource for the classroom, library, and home. Because of the user-friendly style of the information presented, anyone from a teacher to a parent or student could find a use for these books. As a high school mathematics teacher, I see a definite use for the series in my classes.
